How
to get the Powermate Dial to play nicely with O:
The first step is to install the driver and reboot the
system. Then, open up "System Preferences" and you will find
a new preference pane called "PowerMate." When you open it
up, you should see something similar to what is pictured
below. make sure "Global Only" is checked, and then turn your
attention to where the arrow is.
Set "User Action" to "Rotate Right" if it is not already showing
this. Then where it says "Computer Action", change the
selection at the tip of the arrow above to "Send Key" as shown in
the picture immediately below. Then hit the blue "Apply Now"
button indicated by the second arrow.
After you hit the "Apply Now" button, you see something resembling
the pane below. Now press the "Change Key" button that is
circled. This allows you to change the key from the default
setting (currently "Volume Up") to something more useful.
After you hit the "Change Key" button, you will get a second
dialog box as shown below. Where I have circled "Right
Arrow", you want to change this to "Right Arrow" from whatever the
default value entered is (mine was "Volume Up"). To do so,
simply push the right arrow button on your keyboard. (You
don't type into this box.) Then hit the OK button.
Repeat this for "Rotate Left". I also programmed "Click and
Rotate Right (Left)" to send the "Up" ("Down") arrow keys.
This enables me to push down on the dial and quickly select among
different rotational and translational directions.
