Fink for OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)

Before you update from 10.9 or 10.10

First, do a fink selfupdate, to make sure you have the latest version of fink

Then issue

fink reinstall fink

Then update to 10.11. You probably will need to reinstall X11. I installed the latest beta.

You also need the new Xcode or at least the command-line tools, and I think java.

Once you have all of those in place, again issue

fink reinstall fink
fink selfupdate

(I think I needed to do it twice).

If you want, you can use my psbmini repository along with fink’s:

If you have already updated to 10.11, and you are stuck

Base install

Download this tarball

For 10.11.X:

Move it to the root level:

sudo mv fink_sw_10.*.tgz /.

Move whatever you have in /sw out of the way, eg:

sudo mv /sw /sw-ash_heap_of_history

Unpack it:

sudo tar xvfz fink_sw_10*.tgz

Then source it and configure it as suits you:

source /sw/bin/
fink configure

Use My Repositories as well as Fink's Repositories

This will save you a lot of compiling time.

First you need to edit the /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file and add the following line to the bottom of that file:

deb stable main
deb stable main

That's all you need, but more detailed information is located here: Getting your fink installation to use packages that I have pre-compiled

Now you can install fink packages that I have pre-compiled using the apt-get command. Here is an example for installing coot:

fink scanpackages
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install coot
