We are working on several sets of
projects whose main theme is oriented toward trying to understand
the inter-relationships between macromolecular structure and
function. In the case of ribozymes, function includes catalysis. We
are primarily an X-ray crystallography lab, but we are mainly
interested in answering interesting biological questions, and are
therefore not wedded to a single technique. We also try to
encourage collaborations between our group and other groups using
complementary techniques, such as NMR and single-particle
biophysical methods as well as more conventional biochemical and
molecular biological approaches. In general I encourage each lab
member to work on at least two projects; one that is comparatively
"safe" but still interesting, and another that is higher in both
potential risk and potential payoff.
